Mandatory for Heavy-Duty Vehicle and Bus Manufacturers

EDR (Event Data Recorder) is an onboard device that records data about road incidents—commonly known as a vehicle's "black box". Its function is to automatically record selected driving parameters several seconds before, during, and after a collision or road accident. EDR does not record audio or video; it exclusively focuses on technical data essential for safety analysis.

Thanks to recorded technical data, investigators, manufacturers, and safety engineers can accurately reconstruct incidents, identify causes, and determine potential human or systemic errors.

EDR data is valuable in enhancing Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADAS) and autonomous driving technologies, contributing to overall road safety improvement.

Manufacturers can analyze the effectiveness of passive (e.g., airbags) and active (e.g., emergency braking systems) safety measures, directly influencing future vehicle designs.

In certain jurisdictions, EDR data can serve as evidence in civil or criminal proceedings—provided compliance with local legislation and data protection laws.

Although EDR data isn’t accessible to end-users, manufacturers in cooperation with fleet operators can analyze it, indirectly enhancing fleet risk management and driver safety optimization.
